HST gone. But not really.
It was April 1st, 2013 when the British Columbia government brought the Provincial Sales Tax back and ended its experiment with HST. Was it a cruel sense of humour or just coincidence that April Fool’s Day was chosen? We may never know.
What we do know is that since then, organizations have been grappling with the change in tax regimes. For some organizations, the return to PST was a relief, for some it was a significant challenge.
For most organizations, the HST period, now more than 2 years past, has been largely forgotten.
For us, it’s still very much a reality. Because we retroactively review organizations looking back as far as 4 years ago, we still look at transactions where HST was a factor, and yes, still find recoveries of HST.
In many cases, HST makes up the majority of our refund claims at a client. In all cases, we’re reviewing records and periods which were long ago closed off and finalized.
Chances are, if you’re a client of ours, we’ve found savings for you in that long forgotten period. If you’re not a client, there may just be undiscovered refunds available in those dusty old files.
